Abstract
An experimental study was carried out to compare the toxic effect of macrophages and bone tissue reaction in pure titanium(pTi), titanium coated with carbide(TiC) and titanium coated with nitride (TiN). pTi, TiC and TiN were inserted into the 6 rabbits femur shafts and examined bone tissue reaction after 3 monthes and 6monthes.
Results are as follows :
1. The viability of macrophages was 88.7% in pTi, 89.8% in TiC and 80.5% in TiN case. The lowest macrophages viability rate was seen in TiN inserted case. 2. The size of the callus after 3 monthes was the smallest in pTi inserted case and also found the dark colored deposition around the inserted site. The size of the callus after 6 monthes were similar in all cases and the dark colored deposition, appeared in the pTi inserted case, was not observed. 3. The degree of infiltration of the macrophages after 3 monthes was prominent in pTi inserted case and dark pigmented particles were not seen in microscopic examination. The bone tissue reactions after 6 monthes showed similar repair process in all cases. Above results suggested that the TiC was good implants at early stage, but the repair processes were similar in all cases with time.
